CAST News

As this year has unfolded, it has proven to be an exciting year for the arts in Tasmania with the State Government announcing $1.5 million new recurrent arts funding and providing Arts Tasmania with a substantial opportunity to develop new initiatives and increase funding to a number of existing arts companies and grants programs; CAST's annual recurrent funding from Arts Tasmania will increase $15,000 per annum.  Outcomes from the Minister for the Arts' initiative, An Island Inspired (the mechanism through which arts community input was gathered and which inform new initiatives) are yet to be announced.

It is also the year that CAST's triennial Strategic Business Plan for 2008 - 2010 is due with both the state and federal funding bodies.  The plan locates the organisation in an expanding visual arts environment in Tasmania; cognisant of major new developments, including the upgrade and expansion of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery's city facilities and the exciting Museum of Old and New Art development at Berriedale, amongst other proposals. The Tasmanian Government is supportive of CAST's endeavour to align with new major developments and be assisted with the relocation in the Sullivans Cove precinct.  Relocation remains the key initiative for the Board - its fit within Government's vision for the development of the waterfront is heartening and sustains our resolve to continue to work towards this important strategic goal.

Over the new triennium, CAST's core business will be to continue to service innovative art practice and new artists and to foster new audiences for the pre-market sector of professional visual art, craft, design and electronic media arts. The organisation will also continue to play a coordinating role in the small-to-medium, public gallery sector, to continue partnership activities with these organizations and to maintain or build upon established and successful programs in exhibition development, mentorships and publications activity. The plan also includes developing new public dialogue initiatives designed to deepen and broaden the degree of public engagement with our gallery and touring exhibition programs. The main delivery mechanism for these initiatives will be through a redevelopment of the website and upgrade of the material and programs the site delivers, along with a program of artists' floor talks to complement the gallery program.

Finally, and importantly, the 2007 CAST Members’ Exhibition is looming.  Entry forms will be due at CAST office by Monday, 5 November. Forms can be collected or requested from the CAST office or downloaded HERE. (MS Word doc, 76 KB)

Program News

Nourish (21st April – 13th May)curated by Zara Stanhope (Deputy Director, Senior Curator of Heide Museum) was the second in an ongoing series of craft and design exhibitions curated by interstate curators, the first being Suzie Attiwill’s Making Relations in 2006. The exhibition focused on the work of artists who consciously used recycled material in the making of their work. On display was the work of Futago, Belinda Holloway, Fiona Lee, Linda van Niekerk, Tricia Swanton, Marcus Tatton, Toni ten Bensel, Andy Vagg, and John Vella. The exhibition was accompanied by a free publication, in which craft and design practitioners from across Tasmania were invited to submit an outline of their work. This CAST initiative, supported by Arts Tasmania, continues to enhance the sector and will be followed in 2008 with an exhibition curated by Peter Anderson (independent curator and writer)

With the backing of CAST’s Exhibition Development Fund, Derek Hart was able to undertake substantial research for his outstanding exhibition, Room (26th May – 17th June). It presented the work of (Kathryn Faludi-Ball (TAS), Matt Warren (TAS), Kylie Stillman (NSW), Catriona Stanton (NT), Katrina Simmons (SA), Stephen Garrett (VIC) and Simon Horsburgh (VIC). With very sparse exhibition design, Hart was able to create a contemplative environment in which all the works combined to evoke a fusion of the familiar and the eerie. Room will tour to Burnie Regional Gallery, opening on the14th December 2007 and continuing until 20th January 2008.

This year’s 3 into 1 exhibitions (30th June – 22nd July) brought together the work of three emerging Hobart artists whose works present a subjective psychological rawness in different ways. Andy Wear’s, The Honourable Senator, looked at the paucity of communication in a world obsessed by communications technology, Caz Rodwell’s assemblage, Absence and Solitude, based on the perverse writings of Georges Bataille, considers a possible loss of self through excess, and Andrew Harper’s video, A Thousand Pardons, presented a harrowing performance from Andrew, playing out a sense of alienated inconsequence in an environment of political bankruptcy.

Infinite Empire, curated by Carole Hammond (27th July – 26th Aug) was the result of CAST’s 2007 Curatorial Mentorship Program. This exhibition looked at the subculture of Steampunk as an attempt to redress a technological world apparently out of control. Incorporating video, digital prints, furniture, jewellery and costume design, Infinite Empire presented the works of Sonia Heap (Tas), The Lycette Bros. (Vic), Aurélien Police (France), Madeleine Rosca (Tas), James Vaughan (Tas), Julia deVille (Vic) and Jon Williamson (Tas).

Samantha Clark’s The Subtle Ether, opened on the 7th September. Sam’s video and installation works are driven by poetic science. They make us look again at the world we inhabit and the universe we are inextricably bound to. Clark invites us to consider the spaces between the words and terms we use to define our world, sparking imaginative wonder within our everyday experience of physical reality. The Subtle Ether closes on the 30th September and will tour to Devonport Regional Gallery opening on the 12th October and closing on the 11th November.

The CAST Program Committee met on the 14th July to look at proposals for the 2008-09 period and to select the 2008 Curatorial Mentorship recipient. In the gallery next year we will endeavour to provide as interesting and balanced a program as possible whilst maintaining: the guest curated craft/design exhibition; the Curatorial Mentorship Program; the 3 into 1 exhibitions and of course, the ever popular, Members exhibition.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to Jack Robins who has recently been appointed as CAST’s 2008 Curatorial Mentorship recipient. He will be presenting an exhibition of work examining processes of adaptation between the urban and natural environments. All the best Jack!

The CAST Curatorial Forum and Workshop was held on the 13th and 14th of April at the Hobart Function and Conference Centre, Elizabeth Pier. This successful and much welcomed initiative provided an introduction to contemporary curatorial practice, and incentive for those wishing to develop exhibitions and curatorial projects in Tasmania.

The Forum and Workshops were assisted by a panel of seven prominent national curators and were chaired by the independent curator and writer Stuart Koop. Other members of the panel were David O’Halloran (Apartment), Jason Smith, (Curator of Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Victoria) Laresa Kosloff (CLUBSProject Inc), Spiros Panigirakis (CLUBSProject Inc), Zara Stanhope (Deputy Director, Senior Curator of Heide Museum) and Kyla MacFarlane (Assistant Curator/Exhibitions at Monash University Museum of Art). Representatives from the Tasmanian public gallery sector also played an active role in the event.

Stuart Koop gave the opening address on the Friday night, followed on Saturday morning by a series of papers given by each member of the panel. In addition to these papers, information sessions given from Tasmanian public gallery representatives, regarding curatorial opportunities in the state, provided a good opportunity for the participants to become more aware of possibilities for curating in the state. The workshops were held on the Saturday afternoon and gave emerging curators an invaluable opportunity to discuss their projects and ideas in group sessions directed by members of the panel. The intense and positive atmosphere among the participants was testimony to the interest in, and perceived potential for, curatorial activity and is therefore very encouraging for the future of exhibition projects in Tasmania.

Around 60 people attended the two day event, 32 of which participated in the workshop sessions. There was a very high level of interest, even from the early planning stage, and the event has inspired many to think positively about the possibilities for curating here in Tasmania and, for some, to apply for funds to bring those ideas to fruition.

The development of CAST’s e-journal and web gallery (STOCK-SITE) is still, unfortunately, experiencing some teething problems, technical issues and staffing levels being the primary cause. Bec Tudor, a current PhD theory student at the Art School, experienced in working with dynamic web sites, has recently volunteered her services to assist with the technical and editorial development of the site. We welcome Bec with open arms and thank her for helping CAST in what will be a great opportunity to foster critical awareness in the local contemporary art sector.
